Tiny dogs are taking over in the U.S., according to new research out in honor of National Dog Day, coming up on August 26th. It finds that Chihuahuas have officially dethroned Labrador retrievers as the most popular dog breed, but the beloved lab is still number two.
- The research comes from JustAnswer and is based on an analysis of nearly 115-thousand conversations between dog owners and veterinary experts.
- It finds that there are some regional preferences in dog breeds. In the Northeast and Midwest, Labs are still leading the pack, while in the Southeast and West, Chihuahuas are top dog.
- But according to registration from the American Kennel Club, French Bulldogs are the most popular purebred dog in the country.
- When it comes to names, “Luna” tops the list this year, climbing up from number two in 2024.
- It beats “Bella,” which was number one, pushing it to third, right behind “Daisy.”
- “Lucy” is the most popular dog name in the Midwest, while “Luna” rules in the Northeast and Southeast, and “Daisy” is tops in the West.
- Some names tend to be breed specific, as “Chloe” and “Mac” are especially popular for Chihuahuas. Lab owners prefer “Daisy” and “Duke,” while “Roxie” and “Beast” are popular for pitbulls.
